What is EMI?

EMI stands for Equated Monthly Installment — the fixed amount you pay every month towards your loan, which includes both the principal repayment and interest charges. Every EMI you pay covers a portion of the principal and a portion of interest, with the interest portion gradually decreasing over the loan tenure.

EMI Formula Explained

EMI is calculated using the formula: EMI = P × r × (1+r)^n / ((1+r)^n − 1), where P is the principal loan amount, r is the monthly interest rate (annual rate divided by 12 divided by 100), and n is the total number of monthly installments (loan tenure in months).

Home Loan vs Car Loan vs Personal Loan EMI

Home loans typically have the lowest interest rates (around 8-9.5%) and the longest tenures (up to 30 years), resulting in lower EMIs but higher total interest paid. Car loans have moderate rates (9-11%) with tenures up to 7 years. Personal loans have the highest interest rates (11-24%) but shorter tenures, since they are unsecured.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is EMI calculated for a home loan?

Home loan EMI is calculated using your loan amount, the bank's interest rate, and your chosen tenure (usually 10-30 years). Our calculator instantly shows your monthly EMI along with the total interest you'll pay.

Can I reduce my EMI amount?

Yes — you can reduce EMI by choosing a longer tenure (though you'll pay more total interest), making a larger down payment to reduce the principal, or negotiating a lower interest rate with your lender.

What is a good EMI to income ratio?

Most financial advisors recommend keeping your total EMI obligations under 40% of your monthly take-home income to maintain healthy finances.
